- What skills are needed for you to do this job? "Skills needed for this job are good communication skills with both parents and children at a level they can both understand. You must also be able to communicate with the doctor and other health care staff. Knowledge of child development is needed as the scope of pediatrics runs from newborns to adolescents. Compassion for the patient and family. Emotional endurance as you will not only see healthy kids but also kids with chronic or deadly diseases or injuries and trauma. Organizational skills are greatly needed. You will need math skills for calculating medication dosing.Critical thinking skills are a must. Also a sense of humor goes a long way with kids."
- What are the job duties? "Job duties include training, doing physical and psychological health assessments,administering immunizations,vision and hearing exams,obtaining specimens such as urine,blood and cultures. Administering medications by mouth.Obtaining height, weight, blood pressure, pulse and oxygen levels and body mass index. Giving breathing treatments. Assisting the physician with any procedures such as suturing a laceration or casting. Making follow up phone calls. Scheduling hospital procedures such as MRI's or surgery.Teaching and educating parents and kids (if they are old enough). Communication regarding results with the doctor.Documentation of everything that is done."
- What do you like about this job? "I love that I get to do a lot of teaching in my job. Educating parents and kids empowers them. I love seeing kids smile and laugh and I love being able to act silly with them."
- What do you not like about this job? "I do not like having to see children who are abused and injured by the people who are supposed to be protecting the most...their parents."
- What advice would you give a person interested in this career? "The best advice for someone pursuing a pediatric nursing career is to focus on the sciences in school as courses such as microbiology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and biochemistry are the core of nursing education. Volunteer to work with children in any capacity prior to college. Explore all your nursing options, if you pick a career you really love it won't feel like "work"."
- What kind of jobs could someone get in this career? "A pediatric nurse has a vast amount of opportunities. Pediatric nurses can work in clinics, hospitals,the maternity floor, emergency department,operating room, intensive care unit (ICU), public health departments and schools.There is always job security."
- What future changes do you foresee in this career? "Health care is constantly changing. Changes are difficult to predict with the Affordable Health Care Act (Obama Care) just being implemented. My hope is that health care will be widely available to everyone whether they can pay for it or not."
